The social networking website site, Facebook, is now being used and some say abused by debt collectors. One Elk Grove mother says she was scammed by a debt collector who claimed to be a college student looking for advice on her town. She accepted him as a ‘friend’ on her Facebook page even though they had never met. Now she’s got her lawyer working on the case. ”I think this is opening up a whole new can of worms and it’s going to create more problems. But in this economy debt collectors are trying to get more creative to make money,” said attorney Jonathan Stein. The Federal Trade Commission regulates debt collection. Lying in order to collect a debt is illegal, punishable with a fine of up to $1,000.
